Temporary Processing Delays on Interior Protection products. Construction Specialties is conducting scheduled system maintenance beginning July 29. Wall protection shipments will be delayed during this time. Our team is working through this maintenance period and will provide updates as quickly as possible. We appreciate your business and continued trust in CS.

Healthcare Wall Guards, Corner Guards        and Handrails

-

  • Hospital Corner Guards — Protect vulnerable wall corners in patient rooms, corridors, and nursing stations from bed frames, equipment carts, and wheelchairs. Available in surface-mounted and flush-mounted configurations, standard and custom heights, and a full range of angles (45°–179° depending on material).
  • Crash Rails — Designed to absorb impact along corridor walls from beds and gurneys. Available in Acrovyn, wood, aluminum, and stainless steel. Standard stock lengths up to 10' (Acrovyn) and cut-to-size available to 1/16" tolerance.
  • Handrails — Meet building code load requirements (minimum 200 lb. concentrated load) while providing patient support and wall protection. Handrails are available up to 20' in length. Ligature-resistant mounting bracket options available for behavioral health applications.
  • Hospital Bed Wall Guards — Sheet-based and panel-based solutions that protects headwalls and high-contact areas — not just the corner or rail zone.
    • Chemical safety: Free of PVC, phthalates, persistent bioaccumulative toxins (PBT), and bisphenol A (BPA) — eliminating materials the industry has flagged for human and environmental health risks.
    • Resistance to bacterial growth (ASTM G22-75). Testing of Acrovyn wall guard products demonstrated no fungal growth (ASTM G21-96) without the use of antimicrobial additives.
    • Fire rating: UL® Class A/1 rated for all profiles (corner guards, handrails, crash rails) with one-hour and two-hour assembly options available for fire-rated flush-mounted corner guards.
    • Sustainability: Cradle to Cradle Certified™ supporting LEED® v4 Material Ingredient credits (Options 1 & 2), ISO 14001 certified manufacturing, and FSC-certified wood options available in the Renaissance™ line.
All CS healthcare wall guard products ship complete with installation components. For example, corner guards arrive with all fasteners and end caps included. Crash rails and handrails include covers, retainers, brackets, and mounting fasteners.

    Other installation details:

    • Cut-to-size material requires measurements to 1/16" (1.6mm) tolerance.
    • Flush-mounted corner guards are available in partial heights (with special closure caps) for most models — full height is recommended but not always required.
    • Corner guards should start at the top of the cove base height to facilitate floor cleaning.
    • End caps at the bottom of surface-mounted units prevent covers from slipping down. · If your project requires longer lengths or special configurations, contact us. We can review feasibility and support the project.,
In a healthcare environment, it is critical for wall guard products to stand up to frequent disinfection and cleaning. Cleaning and maintaining Acrovyn wall guard products is easy

Routine Cleaning and Disinfection in Healthcare Settings

For day-to-day maintenance, clean Acrovyn wall guards with a mild detergent and water, then wipe dry. The suede texture resists dirt buildup and wipes down easily without trapping contaminants in surface irregularities.

Acrovyn is compatible with a range of hospital-grade disinfectants. After applying any cleaning agent, wipe the surface down with a damp cloth to remove residue — this protects both the material and the finish over time. For chemicals not listed in CS' chemical resistance documentation, test in a small, discreet area first before applying broadly.

Yes. Acrovyn corner guards and other wall guard products are fire-rated and carry a UL® Class A/1 fire rating — the highest surface burning classification, and well above the Class C/3 minimum required by governing building codes including IBC, NFPA, UBC, BOCA, and SBCCI. For installations in fire-rated walls, CS also offers flush-mounted corner guards with UL-labeled one-hour and two-hour assembly ratings
A UL® Class A/1 rating — which all Acrovyn profiles carry — covers surface burning characteristics and satisfies general building code requirements for wall-applied materials. However, when wall guards are being installed in or on a fire-rated assembly, such as a fire-rated wall, door, or door frame, a time-hour rating is required instead.

Applying a non-time-rated product to a fire-rated door or frame will void the rating of that assembly. CS offers flush-mounted corner guards with UL-labeled one-hour and two-hour ratings for fire-rated wall installations, and Acrovyn door and frame protection carries Intertek labeling for 20-minute and 60-minute applications, depending on door type.
Though they're often installed in the same corridor, crash rails and handrails serve distinct functions.

Crash rails are designed primarily to absorb and deflect impact from beds, gurneys, wheelchairs, and carts — protecting the wall surface from repeated heavy contact.

Handrails, by contrast, are structural support elements designed to meet building code load requirements, typically a minimum of 200 lbs. of concentrated load, and are intended to assist patients moving through corridors or on staircases, and are also available with bariatric-rated options.

In many hospital projects, both are specified together: the handrail provides patient support at the appropriate code-required height, while the crash rail protects the wall at the zone most vulnerable to equipment impact. CS offers both product lines in Acrovyn, real wood, and metal profiles so they can be coordinated aesthetically across a project.
Yes, CS’ hospital wall guards can be used in behavioral health units, and CS offers specific features designed with behavioral health environments in mind. Most handrail models are available with ligature-resistant mounting brackets — an important consideration in psychiatric and behavioral health units where fixture and hardware design directly impacts patient safety.
Standard heights for Acrovyn corner guards are 4', 8', and 10', with 10' being the maximum for most models. For end wall corner guards, maximum seamless heights vary slightly by model — the FSC-25N tops out at 9'6" without a seam, while the SSM-25MN reaches 10'. Real wood corner guards are supplied cut-to-size with a standard maximum of 10'. If your project requires heights beyond these standards, contact your local CS representative to discuss options. It's also worth noting that CS recommends starting corner guard installation at the top of the cove base height — rather than at the finished floor — to make floor cleaning easier, which is a practical consideration in healthcare settings where hygiene protocols are frequent and rigorous.
